Chrometa
tracks activity on your computer every second by looking at the "Active
Window": this is the window that has the focus of your mouse and
keyboard.
At any given time you only have one active window, even if you're toggling between windows or using multiple monitors.
The active window is linked to a:
- Document (Word document for example). Chrometa records the document name, folder name and the program name (e.g. MS Word, Acrobat PDF...) - Offline, server, local, VPN, VM, Online (google Docs, OneDrive)
- Website (Google Scholar for e.g.). Chrometa records the website title and address
- Email you're reading or composing (with Outlook, Gmail, Outlook 365...). Chrometa records the subject line, sender and recipient(s)' email addresses. - Webmail, desktop app, mobile.
Chrometa never records nor accesses the document's contents.
You
can exclude activities (personal or sensitive) from being tracked. You
can tell Chrometa to ignore, for example, all browsing activity on
Chase.com.
If
using a virtual PC through a VPN, please install Chrometa on the
virtual machine too to capture the time spent working remotely.
Sometimes
when working on a first draft of a document, its name defaults to
"Document 1" and is not saved to a particular folder. This makes it hard
to know what client or project to allocate the time to. In this case,
when Chrometa can not detect a meaningful keyword in the document name,
it takes a screenshot of your desktop/laptop and attaches the picture to
the Timeline view.
