What is "Reconstruct Database"?

Reconstruct Database (under the Tools menu) regenerates your Active Time and Away Time entries based on collected timestamps. Translation: if your Active Time and Away Time data ever looks corrupt, Reconstruct Database was a debug feature designed to fix it. These days, we've improved the app so much that you'll probably never have to use it — it's actually a part of Chrometa's startup process. What happens if you click it? Nothing (unless your data was corrupt, in which case it would be fixed). Go ahead, try it if you want.

How can I back up my data?

It's actually pretty easy to back up all your data (settings, categories, database, the whole nine yards).

Chrometa stores your data in the following directory:
- In Windows XP: "C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username\ChrometaV2\"
- In Windows Vista and 7: "C:\Users\Your Username\ChrometaV2\"

If you use an automatic backup program, just make sure this folder is included and you're all set. Otherwise, just copy this folder to your backup media periodically.

Top Installation-related Questions

Do I need the latest version of Java?

Chrometa requires Java 1.4 and above. In one of the final steps of the installer, you will be prompted to install the latest version of Java. Follow the directions on your screen to complete the Java installation process.

What if I get message telling me that Java is already installed. Do I need to reinstall Java?

No. If you get that message during your installation, it means that you already have the latest version of Java. You can safely cancel the Java installer and proceed with the Chrometa installer.

I was prompted to install "SysInternals", how should I proceed?

SysInternals is a required Windows component for Chrometa. If you receive a prompt to install SysInternals, accept the agreement and follow the steps on screen.

Does Chrometa work on Windows 2000?

No, Windows 2000 does not contain the necessary libraries for Chrometa to function properly.

I just installed Chrometa, but for some reason the text in the program looks like gibberish... what's happening?

You may have an out-of-date or corrupted Helvetica font in Windows.

Step 1: Exit Chrometa (right click on Chrometa's system tray icon, and choose "Exit" in the context menu)

Step 2: Open My Computer, go to C:\Windows\Fonts, and copy all fonts starting with "Helvetica" into a backup folder.

Step 3: Delete all Helvetica fonts from the C:\Windows\Fonts folder, then restart Chrometa.

Top Questions

How do I update to the latest version?

Within the Chrometa window open, go to Help > Check for Updates. If an update is available, click "Download and Update" to download the updater.

Before running the updater, exit Chrometa first. To exit Chrometa, go to File > Exit or right click on the system tray icon then choose "Exit").

Do I need to uninstall Chrometa before installing a new version?

No. Simply run the updater/installer and it will take care of migrating you to the new version.

How can I track time spent reading individual emails in Outlook?

Do you see all your email reading time grouped under the "Inbox" entry? If you want to see the actual time you spend reading individual emails, make sure to open all emails by double clicking on it — this opens each email in a new window, with the subject line as the corresponding window title. Chrometa uses window titles to identify the activity you've been working on.

When you read emails through the "preview pane" in Outlook, Chrometa records it as "Inbox" because that's the active window title.

Chrometa won't start. Where is the system tray icon?

Some users running 2.0.1.2 have reported not being able to launch Chrometa. If you encounter this issue, download and install the latest update (within Chrometa, go to Help > Check for Updates).

Why is my Active Time window blank? Timestamps is full of records!

Check My Categories to see which category is highlighted. Choose "All Categories" to see all of your data. The Active Time window displays records corresponding to the select category. Suppose you create a new category, the corresponding Active Time window will show no records because you have not associated any activities with this category yet.

If selecting "All Categories" still shows you a blank Active Time window, and you see many records under Timestamps, go to Tools > Reconstruct Database. This operation may take several seconds.

Can I drag and drop multiple entries at one time?

Yes. In version 2.0.1.3 and above, you can select multiple entries and drag them directly to categories. If you're running an earlier version, go to "Help" > "Check for Updates" to download the latest update.
